Full Product Description
This is the book for the kid who says he hates reading.
Not because he hates reading. Because every book he has ever been handed was built for someone younger, someone smaller, someone who did not feel the embarrassment of still struggling while everyone else moved on.
The First Cast is different. It is a real story about a real kid doing something real. Jake and his dad loading up the truck before sunrise. Getting to the water before anyone else. Learning how to cast. Waiting. Trying again.
Short sentences. Manageable pages. A kid who feels like they can actually get through it.
That is the whole point.

Why the Stop and Do Activities Work
Most struggling readers check out during passive reading. Their eyes move across the page but nothing sticks.
The Stop and Do activities interrupt that pattern. Every few pages the reader has to actually do something. That interruption keeps the brain engaged and builds comprehension in a way that just reading through never does.
It is multisensory without a lot of extra prep. Everything is right there on the page.
Who This Is For
- An older child who reads significantly below grade level and has refused everything else you have tried.
- A homeschool family who needs a complete reading activity in one place without extra planning.
- A parent or tutor doing one-on-one reading work at home.
- Anyone using a structured literacy or Orton-Gillingham approach who needs high interest decodable text for an older learner.
How to Use It
Start with the Warm Up Kit stories before opening this reader. Five to ten minutes of warm up sight word stories builds confidence and momentum before the main story starts.
Then open The First Cast. Read one section together. Do the Stop and Do activity. Talk about the Field Notes. Keep sessions short — twenty to thirty minutes is enough.
The Warm Up Kit with activities is available separately or you can get both together in the Fishing Dock Series bundle.

Everything I share here came from years of sitting across the table from a kid who learned differently. The printables in the shop are what we actually used. If you are looking for something age appropriate and built for an older struggling reader, start here.

I am a mom sharing our story with dyslexia. This is not professional educational advice. Every child and every family situation is different.
